Book review: The Passage
Posted on Tuesday, August 31st, 2010
The Passage, a novel by Justin Cronin – The Passage is not just another ‘vampire’ thriller. In fact, you don’t have to be a fan of vampire fiction to love this remarkable tale. Cronin is a master story teller and brings depth and vitality to this captivating epic about a virus that nearly destroys the world.
The virus, which is believed to extend human life, has disastrous results for mankind, after being transported to the US by scientists. The Passage takes readers on a journey from the early days of the virus to the aftermath of the destruction, where packs of hungry infected “virals” spread across cities looking for food while the sole survivors are shadowed by fear.
Cronin doesn’t shy away from calling his “virals” vampires. But don’t think about these creatures as classic “Dracula-like” figures. Cronin’s “virals” are hairless, insectile, glow-in-the-dark mutations who are entangled with their makers and a six-year-old girl who holds the key to destroy them all.
The Passage is no quick read, but a sweeping, captivating epic that will utterly transport the reader to another world, a place both haunting and horrifying to experience. Cronin weaves together multiple story lines that build into a journey spanning one hundred years and nearly 800 pages.
Being the first of a proposed trilogy, it’s already under development by director Ripley Scott and the subject of much publicity buzz. Consider this book as a must-read for fans of the genre!
